SYNOPSIS
With FALKEN headed to the Pacific, Andy has been on the lookout for a boat for a few limited passages in the Atlantic in 2025 & 2026…and we’ve found it! 59º North will use ADRIENNE II for the second time in 2025, for the return passage from Rio, across the equator to the Canaries, and we’ll run it exactly like any other 59º North trip. She’ll be skippered by Erik Nordborg.
THE BOAT: 'ADRIENNE' | MODIFIED SWAN 651
The boat is a lengthened German Frers-designed Swan 651, now measuring 70-feet thanks to an extended transom. She's got a new customized keel and a carbon-fiber rig, and is owned by Gurra Krantz, a 4x Whitbread/Volvo Ocean Race skipper. He uses the boat solely for the TV-show, so it’s outfitted properly for this type of sailing.
PASSAGE PLAN | RIO TO CANARY ISLANDS
The passage will be a nonstop "delivery" type sail back to the Canary Islands direct from Rio de Janeiro. We'll run it exactly like our normal trips - you'll get the same newsletters leading up to the start; the same briefings in port; and the same experience at-sea.
typical Weather Pattern
The challenge on this return passage will be skirting the Atlantic High and finding favorable winds as you sail first north and then east towards the Canaries. A direct rhumb-line route would be dead into the Easterly Trades, so skipper Erik - who is also a professional meteorologist - will teach the crew about weather patterns and how to route this trip for the best sailing conditions.
The typical weather pattern in September involves a trade wind regime characterized by consistent easterly trades. Average wind speeds range from 15 to 25 knots, enabling smooth sailing conditions, though squalls can occur unexpectedly.
There’s the added challenge of course of navigating the doldrums and getting across the equator! King Neptune surely will make an appearance…
As you near the Canary Islands, temperatures start to cool slightly, particularly at night, reaching around 15 to 20 °C (low 60s °F). The wind may also become less stable, accompanied by a potential shift in direction. Navigating through the islands can present local weather variations due to topography, with calms and gusts experienced as the vessels approach land.
Overall, the passage is characterized by moderate to brisk winds, warm temperatures, and potentially variable sea conditions.
