BIO
Phoebe Rogers says she’s a mountain girl at heart but that she has a bit of a sailing problem. Her sailing career began in Lake Tahoe, CA aboard her stepfather's Melges 24, on which she crewed with him for community races since she was 14 years old. She now holds her USCG Masters MMC and a commercially endorsed RYA Yachtmaster Offshore qualification. She has worked on a range of different vessels, from adventure sailing yachts all the way down to teaching on zippy little dinghies. In 2020, she struggled to ignore her instinct to not wait until “later” to live the life she was passionate about, so she quit her legal assistant job and started racking up mileage on offshore vessels. She has an ardor for teaching and empowering others through the transformative medium of sailing. She believes fervently in the power of crew work, selective adversity, and extreme adventures in the remote stretches of the world to bring us closer to our environment, to each other, and to ourselves. Her best kept secret is that the true privilege of a life offshore is witnessing and partaking in the incredible personal transformation of the guests she’s so lucky to work with and the crews she’s honored to be a part of. And, ultimately, helping people safely fulfill their wildest dreams of sailing on the open ocean!

Passion
I'm deeply passionate about the potential for challenging experiences in adverse environments to push out out of our comfort zones and transform our relationships to our own agency, competence, empowerment, and self-concepts. My background in outdoor education has helped me hone this skill of building teams and connection people to their inner strength and resilience on passages and in the backcountry. I ardently believe there is no better arena for grappling with our internal challenges then undergoing condifence-building circumstancial challenges. For this reason I'm deeply inspired by sailing therapy in a long-term career sense and am interested in exploring more about how offshore trips can be structured to really tap into this transformational relationship between peoples individual potential and empowerment through the medium of offshore sailing.
Leadership
I believe good leadership starts with good communication. A good leader knows that if a crew member doesn't understand a command or explanation, they haven't explained it well enough. Briefing is an art form and debriefing when it's safe to do so is just as important. A good leader knows how to step back and direct from the side-stage, empowering team members with responsibility where it's appropriate, and uplifting individuals, giving them ownership and pride over their role and contributions to the crew. Vigilance for details espeicially regarding safety, but grace and flexibility when minor mistakes are made. A good follower always checks for understanding. If there's any uncertainty in a command, they double-check rather than acting on probability. They know when to question commands especially when it comes to safety and life-risking decisions, but they also know when it's more appropriate to follow a command but then debriefing later, with an open mind for learning something new or a different way of doing something. They respect the chain of command but also take responsibility for speaking up when it is in the interest of the safetly of the crew and the vessel.
