At 20, Ryan moved to Shanghai and arrived to find the city in a fever-dream state of transformation. Seven years later, after what felt like a lifetime of experiences, he returned to California determined to maintain the spirit of deliberate, everyday adventure. Ryan learned to sail on the San Francisco Bay, inspired by a dream of exploring the world by sea. One day while driving across the Bay Bridge, he tuned into his favorite sailing podcast and heard Andy talking about starting an offshore sailing business; within hours he’d booked a berth on one of the first 59º North passages. Bonding over a broken furler and a ripped mainsail, they became fast friends and, eventually, business partners. Ryan went on to fulfill his cruising dreams, visiting over 20 countries with his wife, Kathryn, on their Caliber 40. He now holds a USCG Master and Yachtmaster Offshore licenses and lives in San Diego, where he’s usually either raising his two daughters, tending a backyard tropical orchard, or finding excuses to get his Tartan 33R out on the water.
