Sailing

I'm stoked to share what an epic experience this is and will continue to be. I don't even know where to start. Today marks day 6 of one of the most epic passages I've decided to take on.

There is something wildly exciting and equally calming about being surrounded by nothing but ocean. I get to watch the entire rhythm of the world shrink down to wind, weather, watches, and 10 humans trying to get a sailboat to another continent. oh, and LOTS of laughter, silly jokes, and innocent pranks. Let's just say it's fair game up in here to clown one another. All in good fun of course.

I’ve been making it a point to journal everyday – and with that, there’s so many topics I could share. Being offline and unplugged from life on land to the epic night sailing among the stars. There’s been so many unreal memories and reflections.. and i’m elated to know there’s only going to be more ahead. There are truly very few experiences left where you can truly dissapear from normal life for a few weeks.

I'm not sure if former bloggers have noted, but this passage is HOT as balls. While we were all provided with a tropical packing list, i’m not sure any of us anticipated what we were in for. Nighttime slumber has turned into a game of who can snag the cockpit ”rolls-royce” bunk.. AKA the spot that provides fresh air and soothing white noise of the waves around us. Everyone takes turns clipping in and dozing off while the rest of us sweat away in our bunks below. But imagine waking up at 2am because its your turn to helm across the atlantic. TOTALLY worth it.

While I feel I could write about a million different things, I’m going to let a real life intermission right now steer my topic for the night. So today you get to immerse in the heat and hummidity of our offshore life in all it’s glory. I’m perched on the nav station typing on a keyboard for the first time in a week, which is honestly quite glorious. It’s been so fulfilling being unplugged from society, internet, and taking pen to paper journaling. Its also been bery humbling as i find myself questioning a lot of the words i write and theres no autocorrent embedded in college rules journals.

Anywho, this intermission is sponsored by our first mate Naxo. (prounounced like Nacho, which is quite fitting considering he keeps us cheezin ☺ and very well fed)

This heat is wild. We’ve got one big fan that finds its way around the saloon, pointing in different spaces at any given time of day, depending who manages to snag it first. Post dinner, it was naturally pointed in the galley as the chef of the night and crew on wash duty get priority cooling.

Naxo is studying celestial navigation in the saloon.. this particular combo has been quite entertaining the last 24 hours. Wait, who I am kidding, Naxo himself is a total hoot and has kept us laughing for days. Anyways, back to the topic. Naxo and Navigation. Earlier this afternoon, he was reading on the settee in the boiling heat and managed to pass out book in hand. Not sure if it was the reading, the heat, or the lingering aromas from well.. imagine 10 people living in close quarters among 90 degrees F. Aromas will do their thing. Regardless, it was entertaining and endearing to see his dedication although a little slumber took priority.

And just now, no less than 5 minutes ago, he's back at it freshening up on his celestial calculations, however this time he's hootin and hollering how hot it is. He jumps up in search of the fan, and in the most funny dramatic tone says he MUST point it in his direction before he has a stroke. (let it be known, he's not really going to have a stroke.. but if he did, the good news is we have a doctor on board. Ayyyo Anton, our apprentice)

I feel I could write a short series on all the funny moments Naxo has given this crew. We continue to laugh, learn, and sweat.

OK, I could share so much more but I myself am going to climb up the stairs to the fwd cockpit and snag some fresh air.

Cheers,

Katelyn

She’s a big ship on a much bigger ocean2335

We also have faced the fact that although Adrienne is a very big ship, she sails over a much, much bigger sea. We all recommitted to being more attentive - treating our watch as a verb not a noun. We might feel comfortable handling Adrienne, but we're not on cruise control and this is no highway. I had not realized to what degree sailing the open ocean requires a daily commitment to awareness, intention, and vigilance. I'm glad for all of us my tutorial was clear but relatively mild.

Day Four: The boat has figured us out

By day 4, things start to get into a rhythm that starts to look like a small community onboard. It’s when personalities start to flourish, when people start losing themselves and start to realize that they don’t really care about a lot of things! I’m pretty sure the disconnection from the internet starts aligning our inner selves. Clearly everyone has gotten their sea legs by now, and even the boat seems to have understood the type of crew she has now. I love to see how people start fitting into different roles with their peers and the boat itself.
