SYNOPSIS

The Ultimate Norway experience! Join ISBJØRN in the small town of Svolvær in Lofoten and sail south, across the Arctic Circle, and along one of the longest and most beautiful coastlines on the planet. We’ll have plenty of time to cover the 700 nautical mile rhumb line, but we could safely spend a decade cruising the same distance without running out of amazing things to see. The trip will likely be a mix of daysails between picturesque island harbors and longer, offshore hops when the wind is particularly favorable.

No better way to prepare yourself than to read Jon Amtrup’s book! Indeed, he will likely be the skipper on this passage. [Sail the Norwegian Coast by Jon Amtrup]

When we reach the latitude of our destination, we’ll still have quite the adventure ahead of us. The coastline splits apart to reveal the entrance to the longest fjord in the world, Sognefjord. We’ll sail all the way to the bottom of the Aurlandsfjord and to the port of Flåm, where we’ll say our goodbyes. But the adventure is not yet over! The only way out of Flåm is by train, up the mountain. It is the steepest, most amazing train ride you’ll ever experience, or August will give you your money back. It takes about an hour for Flåmsbana to connect to the Oslo-Bergen line, from where you can jump on a train to your city of choice.

Typical Weather Pattern

Wind conditions can vary, with coastal areas offering a mix of sheltered and more open water sailing. Wind might funnel and change quickly, particularly in fjord passages. Longer periods of light to no wind is possible. Expect a mix of weather, including rain.

As May bridges the gap between spring and summer, anticipate a temperature range of around 41-59ºF (5-20ºC), with gradual warming as we get further south. Daylight hours continue to lengthen, providing extended periods of natural light.
