SYNOPSIS
In chronological order: Whisky, castles, puffins, cliffs, currents, ocean, prime meridian, fjords, mountains. A proper offshore passage, but with many opportunities to stretch your legs under way, should the weather turn bad for a day or two. Maybe you’ll get to see the Herbredies, Orkneys, or the mystical Fair Isle!
There is another interesting routing option on this passage. Depending on the conditions, the skipper might choose to take the scenic route - through the mountains and castles of Loch Ness! It is possible to lift Isbjørn up through the locks of Inverness, and sail through the Highlands. Maybe Isbjørn’s new depth sounder will be able to spot Nessie?
typical Weather Pattern
The North Sea is like a box of chocolates. You could have sun and shirtsleeves, thermals and gales, or fog and rain. Or maybe all of them! It is a proper weather routing challenge, and you’ll no doubt learn a lot about forecasting. Bergen is at 60 degrees North, but the Gulf stream keeps the climate relatively mild, and temperatures usually range between 12°C to 16°C during the daytime. You can expect around 12 to 14 hours of daylight, with sunrise typically around 6:30 AM and sunset around 7:30 PM.
