2025-13 | FALKEN | Ensenada-San Diego | Sail Training

The Passage
Synopsis
The return passage to San Diego will be a more technically-focused and educational ‘Sail Training Passages’. We’ll spend more time in-port prior to departure diving deep on the details of seamanship, from weather routing and forecasting to knots, splicing, chart work, systems and more. With consistent breeze off Baja California and a short rhumb-line distance to San Diego, we have plenty of space for all points of sail and in-depth training offshore. Offshore, the passage may be broken up into shorter sails or one longer passage.

typical Weather Pattern
Prevailing winds expected from NW to WNW, 10–18 kt, with moderate confidence; occasional gusts to 22 kt possible, especially offshore. Sea state generally moderate, 1.0–1.5 m (3–5 ft), with a moderate chance of locally higher wind waves north of the rhumb line and in exposed offshore segments. Sea surface temperatures likely 62–65ºF (17–18ºC), trending slightly cooler northward. Air temperatures expected 60–68ºF (16–20ºC) by day, 54–60ºF (12–16ºC) at night, with a gradual cooling trend northward and offshore. No significant frontal systems currently forecast, but a moderate chance exists for transient coastal troughs or weak low-pressure features, which could briefly increase wind and sea state, particularly nearshore. Nearshore segments may see lighter winds and smoother seas, with some uncertainty due to local land-sea breeze effects. Offshore, expect more consistent wind and sea state, with a low probability of fog or reduced visibility, especially overnight. This output is AI-generated, based on publicly available meteorological data and is meant to give a high-level overview of expected conditions. Professional forecasting & consulting with our weather-routing partners WRI will be used during the actual passage.
The "typical weather pattern" is meant to be a big-picture overview of expected conditions to help you plan for your passage. They are researched & provided by our good friends at Weather Routing Inc. and even initialed by the forecaster who created them. Once at-sea WRI provide all of our forecasting and routing for all trips and have done so since we started 2015!

Sail Training!
By Alex. FALKEN Skipper | After a windless night drifting between Santa Catalina and San Clemente Islands, we finally managed to find the wind! As soon as the breeze filled in, Adam had just wrapped up his great lesson on boat-keeping and manuals,
Sail Training!
By Alex. FALKEN Skipper | Yesterday we left Ensenada at around 08:30 in the morning. It was sunny and you could barely feel any wind in your face. We went through the process of hoisting sails and straight away we dived into reefing drills followed by tacking. After 6 reefs and 12 tacks, we decided to settle into the watch system and embrace the night.
Departure
By Alex. FALKEN Skipper | After 2 days doing thorough training on shore, learning the systems, doing dry drills and learning about what to look for when purchasing a boat, Falken and her crew are ready for the next stage of this Sail Training: Offshore phase!

FALKEN is a 65-foot Bruce Farr-designed racing yacht, built in 1999 for a round-the-world amateur race. After the race, she was used for sail training before being purchased and refitted in 2022 for offshore sailing and crew comfort.
