2025-2 | RACING | Middle Sea Race

The Passage
Synopsis
Join us in Malta for the Rolex Middle Sea Race! This Mediterranean offshore classic is one of the world's iconic 600-mile offshore races, alongside the Fastnet and the Sydney-Hobart. Steeped in history, the race originally came about due to a rivalry between members of the British Royal Ocean Racing Club and the Royal Malta Yacht Club in 1968. Starting and ending in Malta, the counter-clockwise racecourse circumnavigates the island of Sicily and is known for its changeable weather conditions, and unrivaled natural beauty.
typical Weather Pattern
Prevailing winds expected from NW to WNW, averaging 12–18 kt, with moderate confidence; occasional periods of lighter SSW breezes possible, particularly nearshore. Sea state generally slight to moderate, 0.8–1.5 m (2.5–5 ft), with a moderate chance of locally higher seas offshore during frontal passages. Sea surface temperatures likely to range 23–25°C (73–77°F); air temperatures trending 21–26°C (70–79°F) by day, 17–21°C (63–70°F) at night, with gradual cooling over the period. Moderate chance of a passing low or frontal system, bringing brief periods of freshening winds (up to 22–25 kt) and increased sea state, especially north of the rhumb line. Nearshore segments may see more variable winds and smoother seas, while offshore legs are more exposed to swell and wind shifts. Visibility generally good, with a low probability of showers or reduced visibility during frontal activity.
